Hollywood Bowl Hosts ‘Lion King’ Concert, Teases Future with ‘Young Mufasa’

image

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Hollywood Bowl has staged its share of unforgettable performances, yet this Friday’s “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” is set to eclipse them all. Marking the 30th anniversary of the original animated classic, the live-to-film concert will premiere on Disney+ on February 7, 2025, promising an orchestra of 70 musicians, eye-catching projection work, and Broadway-level costumes and animatronic puppets. But that’s only half the story. In a move that has fans on the edge of their seats, Disney is releasing “Young Mufasa,” a new feature digging deeper into the saga of Pride Rock’s most famous ruler. With Jennifer Hudson and a lineup of Broadway alums adding their powerhouse vocals to the cinematic soundtrack, Friday’s global Disney+ event will allow viewers to indulge in the epic story. Even with the original voice cast on the bill—including Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Ernie Sabella—it’s newcomer North West who’s generating buzz. After a somewhat rocky debut at the Hollywood Bowl a few years back, she’s reportedly returning with fresh vocal training and a newfound confidence. “This place has seen legends from Sinatra to Elton John,” teased producer Gabe Turner in a pre-show briefing. “And now, it’s seeing North step up to the mic with the entire Disney fanbase watching.” “The Lion King” legacy with fresh narratives, pointing to “Young Mufasa” as an expansion. “It’s a lion’s share of nostalgia and newness,” said Sally Wood, another member of the creative brain trust. Rumor has it the film reveals never-before-told stories of Mufasa’s early days—think daring cub adventures and paternal wisdom from an as-yet-unseen generation. Fans can’t wait to piece together how these roots intertwine with the moment Simba was first lifted skyward to claim the kingdom. For anyone who might have doubted that North West could rise to this challenge—well, the Pride Lands have room for redemption arcs too. West made headlines the last time she performed at the Bowl with critics calling her debut shaky, but insiders say she’s been working diligently to elevate her vocals this time. “She knows the stakes,” said creative producer Gabe Turner. “You don’t step onto this stage and forget your lines. She’s taking it seriously.”
